Essential oils 101: how to get started safely
Everything I wish someone had told me before I bought my first bottle.
What essential oils are
Essential oils are concentrated aromatic compounds extracted from plants, usually by steam distillation or, for citrus, cold pressing. Because they're so concentrated, a single drop goes a long way, and that's also why they need to be used with care.
Your first five oils
- Lavender: soft and floral, the most versatile oil to start with.
- Peppermint: bright and cooling, great for daytime blends.
- Lemon or Sweet Orange: cheerful citrus, perfect for the kitchen.
- Eucalyptus: fresh and clean, lovely in shower steam.
- Tea Tree: a staple for DIY cleaning sprays.
A starter kit is usually the cheapest way to get all five. See my kit picks →
How to diffuse
- Fill an ultrasonic diffuser with water to the fill line.
- Add 3–6 drops of essential oil (start low).
- Run it in 30–60 minute intervals rather than all day, in a ventilated room.
- Clean it weekly with a splash of white vinegar and water.
How to dilute
Never apply essential oils straight to skin. Mix them into a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut, jojoba or sweet almond. Common guidelines:
| Dilution | Typical use | Drops per 10 ml |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5–1% | Face, sensitive skin, older adults | 1–2 |
| 2% | Everyday body use | 4 |
| 3% | Short-term, targeted use | 6 |
Safety rules
- Always dilute for topical use and do a patch test first.
- Don't ingest essential oils unless directed by a qualified healthcare professional.
- Keep oils away from eyes, ears and mucous membranes.
- Citrus oils like lemon and bergamot can cause skin reactions in sunlight. Avoid sun exposure for 12 hours after applying.
- Use extra caution with babies, children, pregnancy and nursing, and check age-specific guidelines.
- Store oils in dark glass, tightly capped, out of reach of children.
- If you have a medical condition or take medication, talk to your doctor first.
